A continuation of my last post regarding the temperature in my workplace.
When I arrived at work this morning (7:40 am) it was already in the 80's. My space is probably the 2nd highest to my that of my boss (Mike) who is very much a supervisor who not only has administrative duties, but acutally "works" on a day to day basis.
The temp went up as the day progressed - and it has also been very humid in the office.
The office we use, is fairly large, but is in an area that used to be a warehouse, prior to being converted to office space (many years ago). It was never insulated - so each year there are times in the winter where it way too cold, and times in the summer when it way too hot. But this summer has been the worst (I have been only working in this office since Oct. - so I cannot comment on experience for this). And the month of June, in Hamilton, an many other cities in the Southern Ont. area, have broken temperature/humidex records. Global warming? We hear that it is going to continue into the rest of July.
We have been told, that the A/C problem was being looked into. Yesterday, some A/C mechanics came into our office looking for a problem that was NOT in the part of our building that we are in. And commented on how hot it was ... Mike did tell them that the A/C was supposed to be looked at already - and they said they would be back today.
At 10:50 this morning, Mike came out of his office - which was now already at above 90 degrees and said that we should pack up our lunches and go to the "beach" i.e. about 10 minutes driving, on Lake Ontario, and take an extended lunch to get out of the heat. Yes, the A/C mechanics had come to look at the problem. At first we all thought Mike was kidding - and then he said that no he was not and that we should not be working in these conditions and he was going to tell his boss (who works one floor below, where the A/C is working fine) and did not care what HIS boss said. So the rest of us (5), as two were on holidays, got our lunch, decided who would drive and went outside - which was cooler that our office (and waited for Mike to join us). This was before 11:00 am. We drove to the beach area, walked awhile in the breeze, found a picnic table in some shade, and sat, ate our lunch and watched people on the beach, in the water, the birds etc. and had some great conversation - about not only work but things going on in our life.
We got back to our office at 1:15 - to find no change in temperature - but with an e-mail from Mike's boss (to all of us) - saying that he was sorry for what we had gone through and that he had left a treat in our kitchen freezer - a box of ice-cream drumsticks and a box of juice-bars.
About 3:00 pm, the mechanics came to say that they think they had solved our problem - and within a few minutes we noticed a small change. Mike did tell come and tell us at 3:15 that if we wanted to go home we could (our normal hours are 8:00 to 4:15) but none of us did.
I am off until Monday - I guess I will know then if the A/C repair worked.
I am currently working with a great bunch of people - with ages ranging from the mid-fifties to the youngest - who will be 24 later this month. In my 32+ years at Stelco, I have had many bosses - most of whom have been great. Mike is the best I have ever had - and I base this, even though I have only been working for him since Oct. of last year. I have told him how I feel. Today was an example of a "boss" who cares for his employees and does not care of the ramifications.
